Saturday on Sherman Hill

"On Sherman Hill," wc/ink on paper, ~8x15

Last weekend the Saturday sketch group had difficulty deciding where to go, with several groups going to different locales. I chose to go to Sherman Hill, an enclave of Victorian houses just northwest of downtown. After scouting sites I decided on a big house surrounded by nature trees. The gables and turret were deciding factors. This part of Des Moines dates to the late 19th century, after a pioneer entrepreneur built his home there.

My usual technique came into play--graphite sketch, paint, adjust, ink--but not being used to this size sketchbook it took longer than expected. Although most of this one was done on site, I finished some of it later on in my home studio.
